Gynecomastia Surgery – What Can You Expect?

The surgical procedure for Gynecomastia is basically a routine surgery. If you have this condition then it is likely that you have seen the before and after pictures that display the amazing results that the surgery can provide. Gynecomastia requires a cosmetic surgical approach and is almost always done on an outpatient basis. If you are scheduled for surgery to correct Gynecomastia or are just considering the potential here are a few ideas of what to expect.

First, your doctor should schedule a full CBS, which is a complete blood count. You will also be asked about the medications that you have been taking. They are especially interested in any aspirin take for preventative bleeding possibilities. This procedure could have been done at a lab or maybe even at your doctor’s office. The anesthesiologist will also want to evaluate these reports as well to determine the best form of anesthesia to administrator.

Preparing for the surgery will begin a couple of weeks in advance. This is when the doctor will require that you refrain from almost all medication, especially aspirin, Advil or ibuprofen, any herbal remedies, and Vitamin E. No smoking is allowed for at least two weeks prior to the surgery. Once the surgery is complete and it typically takes a couple of hours, you will go to the recovery room for another two hours or so and then you will be able to go home. Of course, you will not be able to drive yourself.

The approach that is most commonly used in surgery for the treatment of Gynecomastia is open removal of the glandular tissue and liposuction of the breast and surrounding area. There are a couple different types of liposuction that doctors use but with Gynecomastia they use tumescent liposuction. In this procedure the surgeon enlarges the area where the liposuction will be performed with an adequate portion of sterile solution and epinephrine which will help reduce bleeding. If the patient has an excess amount of enlargement in the breast area then a more intrusive procedure will be used. The doctor may then do a procedure that is similar to a mastectomy followed by the liposuction.

The anesthesia that is administered prior to surgery is designed to keep you comfortable for about 24 hours. After that you will use pain medication prescribed by the surgical doctor. Most people claim that there really is no pain involved but rather a soreness that can be expected after any such surgery. Many doctors use what is called a drain when performing Gynecomastia surgery. This is a small tube that is inserted at the site of surgery that attaches to a small bulb. This allows any fluids to drain directly into the bulb which is very simple to empty. This process has had a very favorable exit in terms of healing time. Very small sutures are also used with this surgery and will be removed in about 7-10 days. Depending on the type of work that you do, you can expect to be off of work anywhere from 5 to 14 days.

Surgery should be considered as a last resort for getting rid of Gynecomastia when you’ve exhausted all natural means. Often times, you can reduce or get rid of it by a change in diet and exercise. Even with surgery, you would still need to maintain a certain level of fitness because depending on the cause of the condition, it may come back.
